What Are My Options for Getting Straight Teeth?

Filed under: Cosmetic Dentist — Cornerstone Dental Arts @ 8:00 am

You can’t deny the effects of a dazzling straight smile. Not only does it enhance your appearance and provide a boost to your self-esteem, but it may correct a variety of dental issues as well. However, as people will quickly realize, there is more than one option when it comes to achieving straight teeth. Here, we will discuss two of the most common options: traditional braces and Invisalign.

Understanding what each option is and what it can offer for your smile will help patients identify which solution may be right for them. Your smile is as unique as you are, and Cornerstone Dental Arts is dedicated to making sure the appropriate method is selected!

Understanding the Orthodontics Process

The orthodontics process starts with an initial evaluation. At this time, the orthodontist will examine your teeth and determine which steps should be taken to correct alignment. You may need additional x-rays and possibly teeth removal to make room for your new smile. No matter which course of action is chosen, patients should expect to have impressions made of their teeth. The patient’s age, condition of their teeth, and long-term goals are considered in order to determine the best course of action moving forward.

Why You Should See a Specialist

At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we want our patients to have the peace of mind they deserve. We are specialized in orthodontics, and we offer a background of experience focused specifically on this type of dental care. If you are considering your options for straight teeth, turn to the professionals you can count on. Specialists not only have years of experience, but they stay abreast of the latest technology and options, so you are sure to receive the best care possible.

Straight Teeth is More than a Cosmetic Issue

It’s certainly true that many people simply want their smile to look better. However, make no mistake that crooked teeth are more than just a cosmetic issue. Not only can improper alignment cause jaw pain and tension, but it could make it difficult to chew, smile, or speak.
Additionally, crooked teeth may make it harder to clean during brushing properly. Improper oral care can lead to a host of problems, including cavities, gingivitis, and other dental diseases.

Alignment issues may also create bad habits, such as grinding. Over time, the repetition of grinding can significantly wear down teeth and lead to the need for even more dental work down the line.

Not to mention, a crooked smile can wreak havoc on a person’s self-esteem. We often underestimate how much our smile matters in social situations. It can be especially difficult around the workplace, or even when communicating with our family and friends. If your smile is less than perfect, you may find yourself avoiding certain activities. If you want a better smile that can save your confidence and your health, then you’ll want to check out a couple of our straightening options!

Traditional Braces

When it comes to choices, traditional braces are usually what first comes to people’s minds. This method is well-known, trusted, and the most durable option out there. Modern metal braces options aren’t as noticeable, but they are just as reliable as the traditional braces from years past.

Generally, younger patients are offered traditional braces simply because they are cost-effective and can handle a certain level of neglect that is common with children. Special care should be given to cleaning around metal brackets and bands to ensure that the smile remains healthy throughout the treatment process. Children tend to appreciate the numerous vibrant rubber bands that allow them to customize their smiles a little bit more.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a terrific option for people who want a virtually invisible treatment plan. Adults and teens typically prefer this method because it is a less noticeable option that still yields incredible results. This method allows us to slowly transform the smile over time without the need for obvious metal braces, which may offer peace of mind to the hesitant patient.

The series of plastic metal trays slowly align the teeth allowing correction to occur in a series of weeks and months. Patients simply have to remove the trays when eating or brushing their teeth. Wear time varies based on the existing condition of the teeth. Typically, patients should expect to wear the trays for at least six months. Patients appreciate the subtle appearance and dramatic results!

How do Invisalign braces compare to traditional braces?

Filed under: Cosmetic Dentist,Orthodontic Treatment — Cornerstone Dental Arts @ 8:00 am

At Cornerstone Dental Arts, our professionals are here to help patients in the area of Knoxville, TN achieve a smile that makes them proud and confident. When misalignment is a concern, it is important for patients to speak to a dentist about the options available. However, many patients fear bringing up the misalignment of their smile due to concerns that they may be referred to an orthodontist for metal bracket and wire braces. With continued advances in today’s field of dentistry, patients can now reposition their smile without conventional braces and with a practically invisible alternative known as Invisalign braces.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a special method of repositioning the teeth without the use of brackets and wires. Our dentists, including Drs. Joe Griffin, Joshua Kimrey, Ben Stroud, and Michael Williams may offer Invisalign treatment to patients who have mild to moderate misalignment. From the starting point, Invisalign uses clear, medical-grade plastic trays custom-made for the patient. These trays are worn over the teeth and gently move them over several months. By the end of treatment, patients have a beautiful smile—without ever covering their dental arch with metal!

Who is a candidate?

The best patients for Invisalign braces are teenagers and adults who understand the importance of complying with their treatment. These patients may have mild to moderate misalignment. If patients are not a proper candidate for Invisalign, they are referred to an orthodontist that our team trusts. Invisalign can address:

  •       Crooked teeth
  •       Gapped teeth
  •       Overbite and underbite
  •       Crossbites
  •       Turned teeth
  •       Overcrowding (sometimes with extractions prior)

How does Invisalign work?

When patients come into Cornerstone Dental Arts with an interest in a better aligned smile, our dentists will evaluate them and determine if they are proper candidates for Invisalign. If patients choose to move forward with Invisalign, digital impressions are taken of the smile’s current alignment. The dentist will digitally send these impressions to the Invisalign laboratory where a series of plastic trays is designed to bring the smile to proper alignment. When patients receive their trays, they will start wearing the first one at least 20 hours a day for two weeks. Then, they switch to the next tray in the series. They complete their treatment in this manner until the final tray is worn and the smile is transformed!

How do Invisalign braces compare with traditional orthodontics?

While some patients with more several misalignment may still be better suited for traditional braces, many of our patients are excited to find out that Invisalign might be right for their needs. There are many benefits to Invisalign orthodontics when compared with more conventional means:

  •       First and foremost, patients love the ability to reposition the teeth within the smile without having to cover their teeth with brackets and wires.
  •       Patients find it easier to maintain their oral health and wellness because the trays can be removed and the teeth brushed and flossed as normal.
  •       Patients can smile with confidence even while wearing their trays, knowing that their smile is changing each and every day.
  •       Keeping the trays clean is easy, and compliance with treatment ensures that the results desired are the results achieved.

How long does it take to complete the process?

Most patients who seek out Invisalign for smile alignment are excited to find out that they can transform their smile in around one year or less. Patients with more severe misalignment may need to use their trays for up to 18 months. The time needed to get the patient from start to finish with Invisalign trays is determined by the number of trays used. Each tray is worn for two weeks, so progression through the process is determined with this in mind.

Is Invisalign painful?

Absolutely not! While some patients may experience a day or two of mild discomfort when they switch to their next tray, most of our patients find this to be easily addressed with over-the-counter pain medications. Some don’t find it bothersome at all. The movement of the teeth happens in a very gradual manner, but these small changes occurring from tray-to-tray are what makes the treatment a solution for misalignment that our patients enjoy!
