Tooth Colored Fillings

Are you looking for Tooth Colored Fillings in Knoxville?

At Cornerstone Dental Arts, our practice specializes in Tooth Colored Fillings.  If you are looking for tooth colored fillings in or nearby Knoxville, Tennessee, look no further.  We are happy to offer a range of high-quality dental treatment to patients of any age, which includes offering metal-free, tooth colored fillings, or composite resin fillings.  These safe, durable, cosmetically-pleasing restorations offer not only the natural looking appearance of tooth structure, but often can cosmetically enhance the natural tooth’s size, color or shape.  Tooth colored fillings are also frequently called “white fillings”, however the key to a good cosmetic result is a good match.

What color are your teeth?

Matching your tooth shade is a key part of getting a natural looking cosmetic result with tooth colored fillings.

Matching your tooth shade is a key part of getting a natural looking cosmetic result with tooth colored fillings

There are a wide variety of shades of teeth – but the most important aspect is how you feel about the appearance of them.  Many people are blessed with naturally white teeth.  However, there are contributing factors that are beyond your control like genetics, aging, medications, and even traumatic injury that may affect the color of your teeth.  There are also factors that can be controlled, like color intensive food and beverages that can stain teeth.  Items like berries, coffee, red-wine, and color-rich foods can also taint the enamel in your teeth.  Believe it or not, even over fluoridation can cause tooth discoloration. Additional factors like cigarettes and other tobacco uses can cause yellowing and even brown stains to your teeth.

If you are unhappy with the color of your teeth, professional tooth whitening or bleaching through your dentist will allow for whitening all the way to the dentin.  This is the most effective way to lighten the shade of your teeth.  If you are considering some cosmetic dental work, and you are unhappy with the shade of your teeth, it is generally recommended to do professional tooth whitening prior to doing tooth colored fillings or veneers.  When preparing a tooth colored filling, a well-trained dental professional should be able to match the shade of your tooth perfectly whether it is your natural shade, or an enhanced shade.

Should your older metal fillings be replaced?

Silver fillings, or amalgam fillings are still present and functioning without problem for many people, (and there are some dental offices that still use them).  In fact, some insurance policies will only allow for this older, more inexpensive, and non-bio-compatible option.  At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we have always been concerned about biocompatibility, and have taken a more holistic approach to dental care.  We have never used amalgam fillings since we opened our doors in 1988.  We frequently have patients requesting that their amalgam fillings be replaced with tooth colored fillings.  If you are bothered by the dark appearance of your amalgam fillings, or if there is additional tooth decay that has occurred around them, it may be best to replace them with the more modern, and aesthetically pleasing tooth colored fillings.  Amalgam fillings do have mercury as one of their ingredients, and at Cornerstone Dental, we always take extensive measures to ensure our patient’s health and safety in any and all procedures.  Rest assured, when dealing with materials that are not bio-compatible, we adhere to extra safety precautions.

How do you properly care for tooth colored fillings?

Typically the best care for your tooth colored fillings is essentially reflective of good care for your teeth.  Including the following:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal using a soft bristled tooth brush, or at least twice per day.
  • Floss on a daily basis
  • Visit your dental office for dental evaluations and professional cleanings at least twice per year
  • Avoid super sticky food or snacks
  • Use a night guard or a mouth guard if you grind or clench your teeth, or if you are involved with contact sports
  • Avoid and/or discontinue any use of tobacco products
