Frustrated man covering eyes

Do you feel exhausted every day despite getting 7-8 hours of sleep? Does your partner constantly complain about your loud snoring, or do you ever wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air? These are all symptoms of sleep apnea, a very serious condition that can lead to a wide variety of both short and long term health problems.

At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we can provide sleep apnea therapy that doesn’t involve surgery or a loud, bulky CPAP machine. With the help of a simple, custom-made mouthguard, we can solve your sleep problems and help you finally get the restful sleep you need.

What is Sleep Apnea?

When a person has sleep apnea, they temporarily stop breathing for short periods of time throughout the night. The most common form is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and it occurs when the soft tissues in the mouth and throat relax and collapse into a person’s airway, completely blocking it. In order to restore breathing, the body panics and partially wakes up. This can often occur dozens of times each hour, and in many cases, patients have no memory of it in the morning.

The Harm of Sleep Apnea

This constant waking prevents a person from achieving REM sleep, which is the deep, restful sleep a person requires to feel fully restored in the morning. In addition to making a person feel tired all the time, it can also cause their blood pressure to elevate, which is a leading risk factor in heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.

Also, a person suffering from sleep apnea is much more likely to put on weight, have trouble losing weight, and have difficulty keeping weight off. When all of these symptoms are put together, this is why a person with sleep apnea often lives 7 years LESS than the national average.

How We Can Help

The most common treatment for sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure machine, more commonly known as a CPAP. It works by forcing air into a patient’s throat in order to keep it open throughout the night. As you can imagine, many patients find this extremely uncomfortable.

Fortunately, Cornerstone Dental Arts can offer a more comfortable solution that is just as effective: oral appliance therapy.

For this treatment, our team will make you a customized mouthguard that you will only need to wear to bed. It will slightly shift your jaw forward and hold your tongue in place so that you can breathe comfortably while you sleep and wake up reinvigorated. Oral appliance therapy has been studied throughout the world, with one Swedish study in particular noting that it is actually more effective than corrective surgery.

Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

As of this moment, about 80% of those with sleep apnea are either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. If you are suffering from low-quality sleep night after night, the first step to getting treatment is to have a proper diagnosis.

To start this process, all you need to do is take our short sleep quiz. This will give us vital information as to your risk of having sleep apnea. After you have taken it, a member of our team will contact you shortly and advise you on what to do next.
