Once teeth are moved into their new alignment, they need time to stabilize in the surrounding bone and tissue. Without a retainer, they can gradually drift back toward their original positions—a process called “relapse.”
A well-fitted retainer holds your teeth in place while the bone and ligaments around them adapt to their new alignment. This simple step ensures your orthodontic treatment delivers lasting results.
At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we provide three main types of retainers, each with its own advantages.
1. Hawley Retainers
These traditional retainers feature a combination of acrylic and metal wire. The acrylic base fits snugly along the roof or floor of the mouth, while the wire rests along the front of the teeth.
Long-lasting and adjustable
Easy to clean
Allows for minor adjustments by your orthodontist
Available in a variety of colors and styles
2. Essix Retainers
Essix retainers are made from clear plastic material that fits over your teeth—similar to clear aligners.
Virtually invisible
Comfortable and lightweight
Simple to remove and wear
Ideal for daily or nighttime use
They’re a popular choice for those who prefer a discreet look after treatment.
3. Bonded (Fixed) Retainers
Bonded retainers consist of a thin wire attached to the back of the front teeth, usually on the lower arch.
Permanent, so you never forget to wear it
Invisible from the front
Excellent for maintaining front tooth alignment
Our dentists will help determine which option—or combination—is best based on your orthodontic history, lifestyle, and smile goals.
Whether removable or fixed, proper care extends your retainer’s lifespan and keeps your mouth healthy.
Clean removable retainers daily with a soft brush and mild soap (not toothpaste).
Store them in a ventilated case when not in use.
Avoid heat exposure that can warp plastic retainers.
For bonded retainers, floss carefully using threaders or special tools to clean around the wire.
Regular dental visits help ensure your retainer continues to fit and function properly.
How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Most patients wear their removable retainers full-time at first, then transition to nighttime use indefinitely. Teeth can shift at any age, so long-term wear is recommended.
Can I replace a lost or broken retainer?
Absolutely. We can quickly create a replacement using digital scans of your teeth for a perfect fit.
Will my retainer affect how I talk?
You may notice slight changes at first, especially with a Hawley retainer, but your speech will adjust within a few days.
Do bonded retainers require special maintenance?
They require a bit of extra flossing care, but otherwise, they’re low maintenance and provide continuous retention without effort.
