Behavior Management

Helping children build trust and comfort during dental visits is an important part of lifelong oral health. At Cornerstone Dental Arts, our team uses proven behavior management methods—including the Tell-Show-Do technique and, when needed, mild nitrous oxide sedation—to create positive, low-stress experiences for every child we treat.

What Is Behavior Management in Pediatric Dentistry?

Behavior management refers to the gentle strategies dentists use to help children feel safe, cooperative, and comfortable during dental appointments. These approaches encourage positive attitudes toward oral health and prevent dental anxiety from developing over time.

At Cornerstone Dental Arts, our dentists and team are trained to recognize each child’s individual needs. We use patience, communication, and reassurance—never fear or pressure—to build confidence and trust from the very first visit.

The “Tell-Show-Do” Technique

One of the most effective and widely used behavior management methods is Tell-Show-Do. It involves three simple, child-friendly steps:

  1. Tell – We explain what will happen using calm, positive language the child can understand.

  2. Show – We demonstrate the tools or steps on a finger or model so the child knows what to expect.

  3. Do – We gently perform the procedure exactly as described, maintaining calm, supportive communication throughout.

This approach gives children a sense of control and predictability, reducing fear and helping them develop confidence in dental care.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) Sedation

For children who feel particularly anxious or have difficulty sitting still, nitrous oxide sedation may be an option. Often called “laughing gas,” it’s a safe, mild sedative inhaled through a small nose mask. Nitrous oxide helps children feel relaxed and at ease while staying awake and responsive.

Benefits of nitrous oxide include:

  • Safe, gentle, and effective for children

  • Works quickly and wears off within minutes after the mask is removed

  • Allows children to remain conscious and cooperative

  • Reduces fear, anxiety, and discomfort

  • Makes dental care easier and more enjoyable

If nitrous oxide is appropriate for your child, our team will explain every step beforehand and ensure their safety and comfort throughout treatment.

Our Gentle, Positive Approach

We understand that dental visits can feel intimidating to young patients—or even to parents! That’s why we go above and beyond to create a supportive environment with:

  • Friendly, patient-focused communication

  • Calm explanations and gentle demonstrations

  • A child-friendly, welcoming atmosphere

  • Rewards and praise for cooperation and bravery

Our goal is for every child to leave our office smiling—and to look forward to their next visit.

FAQs About Behavior Management

What if my child is afraid of the dentist?
That’s very common! We’ll take time to introduce your child to the environment and equipment gradually, using positive language and encouragement to help them relax.

Is nitrous oxide safe for kids?
Yes. Nitrous oxide has been safely used in pediatric dentistry for decades. It’s carefully monitored and wears off quickly after use.

Will my child remember the procedure?
Yes—nitrous oxide doesn’t cause sleep or memory loss. It simply helps reduce anxiety and discomfort while keeping your child alert.

What if my child still struggles to cooperate?
Our team will work with you to find the best approach. In most cases, consistent positive visits build trust and make each appointment easier over time.
