Oral pathology is the specialty area of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the mouth and surrounding areas. This can include:
Persistent ulcers or sores
Red or white patches
Lumps, bumps, or thickened tissue
Chronic irritation or unexplained pain
Changes in the tongue, cheeks, gums, or lips
Early detection is key when it comes to oral health. While many lesions are benign, others may require monitoring, treatment, or referral to a specialist. That’s why our experienced team takes a proactive approach to evaluating anything unusual.
A biopsy is a simple procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed and sent to a lab for evaluation. Your dentist may recommend a biopsy if:
A lesion has not healed after two weeks
A spot is growing, changing, or causing discomfort
There’s a history of oral cancer or precancerous conditions
The tissue looks atypical during your exam
A biopsy helps determine whether a spot is harmless, inflammatory, precancerous, or malignant—and it’s the most accurate way to get answers.
Biopsies are typically performed in-office with local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The procedure often takes just a few minutes.
Steps may include:
Numbing the area with local anesthetic
Removing a small section of tissue (incisional or excisional)
Sending the sample to a pathology lab for diagnosis
Scheduling a follow-up to review results and next steps
You may have mild tenderness afterward, but most patients return to normal activities the same day or the next.
In addition to biopsies, our team monitors existing conditions and provides guidance if further action is needed. We stay in communication with oral surgeons or medical specialists if referral is appropriate.
Our focus is your long-term health, and we’re committed to giving you the knowledge and care you need to feel confident in your oral wellness.
Does a biopsy mean I have cancer?
Not at all. Biopsies are performed to rule out a range of conditions. Most are benign, but testing provides clear, definitive information.
Will it hurt?
You’ll be fully numbed for the procedure, and we’ll provide aftercare instructions to minimize any post-op discomfort.
How long do biopsy results take?
Typically, results return within 7–10 days. We’ll contact you as soon as we receive them and explain the findings in detail.
