What Is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a minor oral surgery that removes or reshapes gum tissue (and sometimes bone) to expose more of the natural tooth. It may be recommended for esthetic reasons (to create a more balanced smile) or functional reasons (to allow room for a dental restoration like a crown, bridge, or filling).

Though the name sounds like it adds to the crown, the procedure actually removes excess gum and/or bone to make the tooth appear longer or more accessible.

What to Expect During the Procedure

3. Tissue Adjustment – Excess gum tissue is gently removed or reshaped to expose more of the tooth. In some cases, small amounts of bone are also reshaped.

4. Sutures & Healing – The area is stitched and allowed to heal. A follow-up visit ensures proper recovery.

Healing and Aftercare

• Mild swelling and sensitivity are normal

• Soft foods and gentle brushing are recommended for several days

• Avoid smoking or alcohol, which can delay healing

• Most patients return to normal activity within 1–2 days

• Full healing of the gums may take a few weeks
