Incision & Drainage of Abscess

Dental infections don’t just hurt—they can spread quickly if left untreated. At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we provide timely incision and drainage for oral abscesses to relieve pain and control infection. Whether the abscess is inside the gum, around a tooth, or deeper in the tissues, our team is equipped to act fast, ease symptoms, and guide you toward healing.

What Is a Dental Abscess?

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can develop around the root of a tooth (periapical), in the gum tissue (periodontal), or in surrounding oral structures. These infections may result from untreated decay, gum disease, trauma, or failed dental work.

Common signs include:

  • Sudden or throbbing toothache

  • Swelling in the gums, face, or jaw

  • Redness or warmth in the area

  • Bad taste or drainage in the mouth

  • Fever or swollen lymph nodes

Abscesses are serious and can spread if not addressed quickly. If you’re experiencing symptoms, contact us right away.

How Incision and Drainage Works

If an abscess is swollen and filled with pus, incision and drainage (I&D) is a quick and effective way to relieve pressure and clear the infection.

The procedure typically involves:

  1. Numbing the area with local anesthesia

  2. Making a small incision to allow the pus to drain

  3. Gently irrigating the area to remove bacteria and debris

  4. Placing a drain if necessary (in deeper infections)

  5. Prescribing antibiotics or further treatment as needed

The procedure itself is fast and provides almost immediate relief from pressure and pain.

What Happens After Drainage?

Relieving the pressure is just the first step. Aftercare may include:

  • A course of antibiotics to clear remaining infection

  • Pain management with OTC or prescribed medication

  • Saltwater rinses or medicated mouthwash

  • Recommendations for further care (e.g., root canal, extraction)

We’ll schedule a follow-up to ensure proper healing and help prevent recurrence.

FAQs About Abscess Drainage

Is incision and drainage always necessary for an abscess?
Not always—but when swelling is significant or the abscess won’t resolve with antibiotics alone, drainage is the fastest way to relieve pain and eliminate infection.

Will I feel anything during the procedure?
We use local anesthesia to fully numb the area, so you may feel pressure but no pain. Our team will ensure your comfort throughout the visit.

What happens if an abscess isn’t treated?
Untreated abscesses can lead to serious complications, including bone loss, tooth loss, or systemic infection. Prompt treatment is essential for your health.
