Oral conscious sedation involves taking a small, prescribed medication before your dental appointment to help you feel calm and at ease.
You’ll stay awake and able to respond to your dentist, but your anxiety and awareness of the procedure are significantly reduced.
This sedation option is ideal for patients who:
Experience moderate dental anxiety or fear
Have sensitive teeth or gums
Need multiple or lengthy treatments in one visit
Have had stressful dental experiences in the past
Struggle with a strong gag reflex
At Cornerstone Dental Arts, we tailor your sedation plan carefully to your health, comfort, and treatment needs.
Before Your Appointment
You’ll receive a prescription for a mild sedative (often a benzodiazepine) to take about an hour before your visit. You’ll need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment.
During Treatment
As the medication takes effect, you’ll feel deeply relaxed—sometimes even drowsy—but you’ll remain conscious, comfortable, and able to respond to gentle cues or questions from your dental team.
After Your Appointment
You’ll likely remember very little of your procedure, and the calm effects may linger for a few hours. Rest at home while the medication fully wears off.
Deep relaxation and reduced anxiety
Little or no memory of the procedure
Safe and simple—no IV required
Helpful for complex or multi-step treatments
Makes dentistry comfortable and approachable again
With oral sedation, patients who have avoided dental care due to fear or anxiety can receive the treatment they need with confidence and comfort.
At Cornerstone Dental Arts, your safety is always our top priority.
Our doctors carefully review your medical history and tailor your sedation dosage to your specific needs. Throughout your visit, we monitor your comfort and responsiveness to ensure a completely safe experience.
Oral conscious sedation is FDA-approved and widely recognized as one of the most effective, low-risk ways to make dentistry stress-free.
Will I be asleep?
No. You’ll remain conscious and able to respond, but most patients feel so relaxed they remember little of the procedure.
Can I drive after my appointment?
No. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from the office, as the effects can last several hours.
Is it safe?
Yes. Oral sedation is very safe when administered under professional supervision, especially when health history is reviewed beforehand.
How long do the effects last?
Most patients feel back to normal within 4–6 hours, depending on the medication type and dosage.
Can I combine this with nitrous oxide?
Yes. In some cases, we may combine sedation methods for enhanced relaxation—always under careful monitoring.
