What Is Scaling & Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a non-surgical periodontal therapy used to treat gingivitis and early to moderate periodontitis. This procedure goes beyond a routine dental cleaning by targeting plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacteria that collect deep beneath the gumline and along tooth roots—areas that brushing and flossing can’t reach.

• Scaling removes hardened plaque and bacteria from the surface of the teeth and root surfaces below the gumline.

• Root planing smooths the roots to discourage further bacterial buildup and help the gums reattach to the teeth.

SRP is often the first step in managing periodontal disease and preventing its progression.

3. Scaling – Specialized ultrasonic and hand instruments are used to remove plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins from above and below the gumline.

4. Root Planing – The tooth roots are gently smoothed to promote gum reattachment and reduce inflammation.

5. Post-Treatment Care – Antibacterial rinses or localized antibiotics may be applied to support healing.

Most deep cleanings are completed over two visits—treating one half of the mouth at a time. You’ll then return for a follow-up to monitor healing.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Following SRP, gums may feel slightly tender or swollen, but symptoms usually improve within a few days. Good at-home oral hygiene and ongoing maintenance visits are key to long-term success.

Patients who’ve had SRP often transition to a periodontal maintenance program, returning every 3–4 months for cleanings to keep gum disease under control.
